We will depart from Athens (point of your accommodation) and drive along the coast towards to Corinth. You will access the peninsula by crossing the amazing project of Corinth Canal having the opportunity to photograph it. Our destination is Olympia, the sanctuary of Zeus and birthplace of the Olympic Games, lies in a verdant valley of the western Peloponnese at the confluence of the rivers Alpheios and Kladeos. A landscape of great natural beauty, the whole valley was in ancient times thickly wooded and full of wild olive trees, from the leaves of which were made the wreaths that crowned the Olympian champions; hence the site was named Altis, meaning grove. It was also named Olympia after Mountain Olympus, the abode of Zeus.

The archaeological site of Olympia, one of the largest in Greece, yielded a singularly rich concentration of monuments and works of art, such as the famous statues of Hermes by Praxiteles and Nike by Paeonius. Throughout antiquity, each century added its own structures, which gradually formed the complex topography of the sanctuary: the sacred precinct of Zeus, namely the temenos of Altis, enclosed the temples, votive offerings, and structures related to the religious activities. Outside the enclosure lay the athletic venues, the officials’ quarters, the guesthouses and baths for athletes and visitors alike.

Highlights are: The temple of Hera – The temple of Zeus – The Philippeion – The Stadium of Olympia – The Bouleuterion

After your visit to the archaeological site, lunch will take place at a traditional restaurant. A full day passed by with wonderful pictures and memories and time has come to drive you safely back at your hotel.

Our destination is Delphi. Passing through Viotia, an agricultural centre we will continue towards to mountain Parnassos, making a rest coffee stop at the town of Arachova.

We will then drive on to Delphi, which dates to the ninth century B.C. and whose allure includes an amazing hillside setting and ruins that will intrigue even the most sceptical among you. Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the Greek world’s most important oracle. The area was also a major site for the worship of the god Apollo, a deity who protected the navel of the Earth (centre of the world) in this location. You will see the Roman Agora, walk along the Sacred Way, and view the monument of the Argive Kings, the Treasury of the Athenians, the Athenian Stoa, the Polygonal Wall, the monument of Platea and the Temple of Apollo where the oracle resided. Above the Temple, you can visit the well preserved 3rd-century Theatre. On the lower slope of the mountain is the Tholos, a building whose exact purpose is unknown but architecturally speaking is considered one of the masterpieces of the ancient world. You will also see the Palestra where the athletes trained in preparation for the Pythian Games.

After your visit to the archaeological site, you will visit the adjacent Delphi Archaeological museum which houses the ancient artefacts that were found at the site. As its centrepiece, are the antiquities found in the complex of Oracle which dates from the 18th century B.C. when the oracle was founded to its decline around 300 A.D. Exhibits include many other artefacts.

Departure from Delphi towards to Antikyra, a small port, which will be stop for a traditional Greek lunch by the sea. After lunch, time has come for our safe return back in Athens at your hotel.

We will depart from Athens (point of your accommodation) and drive along the coast towards to Corinth. You will access the peninsula by crossing the amazing project of Corinth Canal having the opportunity to photograph it. Our next stop, will be the ancient city of Corinth. In ancient times, Corinth was amongst the richest cities and this is quite evident by its remains, including the huge Roman Agora (marketplace) and Apollo’s Temple, constructed in the 6th century BC.

Our next destination is Mycenae (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the fortified royal residence of King Agamemnon, leader of the Trojan War. Entrance to its Acropolis is through the famous Lion Gate, which symbolize the power of the kings of Mycenae. The stairway leading to the Palace complex, the grave circle with six royal tombs, the courtier’s houses, sanctuaries, and other important buildings.

Nafplio will be the next city to visit, the first capital of Greece after the 1821 Greek revolution. Here, you will have the opportunity to visit the medieval castle of Palamidi, or you may enjoy a 5 min boat ride to the castle of Bourtzi located in the middle of the harbour of Nafplio, or explore the old city of Nafplio, and finally have a traditional Greek lunch.

Furthermore, our next visit is the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus (UNESCO World Heritage site), with an approximately one hour stop to visit the theatre. In antiquity, Epidaurus was the centre of the Greek medical world and birthplace of Asclepius, patron god of medicine. Psychotherapy, hydrotherapy and brain surgery were some of the treatments performed here. You will see the principal monuments, particularly the temple of Asclepius, the Tholos and the 4th century theatre which is considered one of the purest masterpieces of Greek architecture. As you may be aware of, it’s acoustics are still perfect today.

It’s time to bring you safely back at your hotel, taking the east coast of Peloponnese, after a wonderful day.

Restrictions

Please note that on this tour, your driver is not licensed to accompany you inside any site or museum. If you want a licensed guide to tour the sites with you, you can hire one at extra cost.

Special Notes

Comfortable clothing and sensible, flat-soled walking shoes are recommended. Sun glasses and sun screen are suggested.

Photography is permitted throughout the tour.

Tips

Our prices are much better in comparison to those of the big tour operators, because we are ourselves the tour operator and we do not use third party providers.

It’s always a great idea to bring a bottle of water and sunscreen with you because in the warmer months it becomes quite hot and sunny.

A hat to protect your head and shade your face is also recommended when spending a significant amount of time in the sun.

The area around the archaeological sites can become quite crowded, especially during the peak travel months, so be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you.

Do not accept ‘gifts’ from street vendors approaching tourists. They may offer you roses, but if choose you to accept, you will be expected to pay or give a tip for them.
